Hampton Farm

We are glad you found us!

Hampton Farm is located in southeast Fort Wayne, IN. We are just starting out and only have 4 alpacas. Keep informed by bookmarking this page. Join us by watching our growing farm. Among the things we do best is:

Why alpacas?

We became interested in alpacas after visiting an alpaca farm and fell in love with them. After several visits to different farms we decided to attend a seminar to learn abouth their everyday care and well being.

We learned so much. General healthcare, what types of pasture grass they needed, etc. It was wonderful meeting alpaca owners and owners to be. In the spring of 2009 we purchased our 2 males. We wanted to just start with 2 since we were new to this and didn't want to make mistakes taking care of them. We have been fortunate and they are still healthy.

They are pleasant to be around. They are curious but timid at the same time they are calming to be around. They have 4 bottom teeth that you can see and they hum.

I am certainly no expert. There are so many wonderful websites out there where you can get a lot more information

Their fleece is 7 times warmer than wool, softer than cashmere and silkier than silk. Per shearing each animal per year their fleece is worth around $500 - $800. You can either send the fleece to a mill for processing and get products back such as hats, socks, gloves....or you can find a fiber guild and spin it into yarn. I signed up for a class in spinning that starts after the first of the year.

The US government is encouraging the raising of alpacas by letting write off many of the expences that you incur for them such as feed, vet bills, seed for pastures, fencing, shelters, etc. But again look on the web for additional information.
